What happens during lips filler injection sessions?
For lip filler procedures, your doctor will apply a local anesthetic to your lips. The anesthetic will numb your lips, making the process painless and as comfortable as possible. Anesthetic creams often consist of benzocaine, lidocaine, and tetracaine (BLT). The doctor then uses a fine needle to apply lip filler to some or all parts of the lip, including the edge of the lip, the center bend of the upper lip, and the corners of the lip. It is not painful, but it can cause a pinching sensation and make the eye watery. The doctor inserts 1 mm of lip filler into the lips. The needle does not penetrate more than 2.5 millimeters into the skin. To minimize swelling and bruising, your doctor may place an ice pack on your lips during the procedure. The entire process can take as little as 30 minutes to 2 hours.
What happens after a lip filler injection procedure?
After the session is done, your doctor will gently massage your lips to help absorb the filler. You can also continue icing your lips. Your doctor will monitor you for up to 15 minutes to check for side effects such as dizziness, nausea, or heavy bleeding. They will send you home as soon as they decide you no longer need surveillance. The local anesthetic does not make you tired or dizzy, so you can drive yourself home.
Lips may become swollen, soft, and bruised. Usually, the swelling goes away after 24-48 hours, but in some cases, it may take up to a week. Your doctor will also make a follow-up appointment to check your lips about two weeks after the procedure. Additional photographs may be taken for your medical records so that you can see how your lips were before treatment and after healing.
