What is a PDO Thread Lift?

A PDO Thread lift is a highly efficient non-surgical cosmetic technique, considered the best alternative to the surgical facelift. This technique uses PDO Threads to reduce saggy skin and wrinkles. This procedure can be performed at your clinic in 20 to 45 minutes. The facial enhancement and rejuvenation effects can be seen immediately after the treatment is finished.

The PDO thread lift can be used in combination with other Facial rejuvenation treatments to achieve better results.
Other common names for this cosmetic facial rejuvenation technique are non-surgical thread facelift, one-stitch facelift, lunch break facelift, non-surgical facelift.

What is a PDO Thread?

It is a thin synthetic thread made of Polydioxanone, also known as PDO. The body fully absorbs PDO without producing any scar tissue, making it ideal for biomedical uses.

In aesthetic medicine, the PDO allows practitioners to lift and tighten the sagging skin without cuts or knots, allowing its cosmetic applications. There are two basic types of threads, their thickness, and lengths depending on its function. One variety is a few centimeters long and can be placed virtually in any part of the skin. The other type is 6 to 12.5 cm long called Cog Threads. Cogs have tiny hooks, which grip the skin and pull it. Therefore, Cog Threads are used in areas where the skin folds and wrinkles reduction requires opposing gravity force.

How is the PDO Thread Lift Procedure Performed?

After clinical evaluation of the patient concerned areas, the healthcare provider will suggest a thread lift procedure. The healthcare provider and the patient will discuss the therapeutic goals and identify the patient’s main problematic areas.

  1. The healthcare provider thoroughly cleans the face and neck’s skin.
  2. The area to be treated will be numbed using topical or injected lidocaine, or any other local anesthetic.
  3. The PDO thread clinician will start inserting into the skin, just below its deepest layer called the hypodermis in the fat below the skin called the subcutaneous tissue. Each PDO thread is inserted into the skin one at the time, using a micro-needle until all the areas are treated.
  4. The PDO thread clinician applies a light pressure over each treated area to compress the skin and reshape it.
  5. The healthcare provider cleans the face and neck.

How does a PDO Thread Lift work?

This marvelous product works on different levels and acts for a long time to produce its effects mechanically, intracellular, and biologically.

Instant skin lifting is the fastest result; it is achieved by similar mechanical principles to tighten a rope. The inserted Polydioxanone PDO Thread is anchored to one point across in the skin or scalp and mechanically tight and lifts the tissue on both ends.

Regenerative and cellular renewal. The PDO promotes the formation of new blood vessels, increasing microcirculation. Furthermore, it stimulates cellular tissue healing and repairing through collagen stimulation reshaping the threads’ surroundings. This effect occurs over the next 3 to 6 months after treatment.

Skin Tightening, it is achieved by the stimulation of a cellular group responsible for collagen production called Fibroblast localized in the fat tissue below the skin. The new collagen produces contraction and reorganization of the fat tissue or subcutaneous tissue.

The PDO Thread Lift is a method of skin rejuvenation in which special threads and needles are used.
The doctor first determines the entry and exit points of the thread on the skin and then inserts the thread into the skin and pulls so the sagging and wrinkles of the skin are removed.

The best candidates for facelifts are men and women who have sagging cheeks, forehead and neck.

The PDO thread lift can be used for eyebrow lift, nose lift, face angulation, wrinkle removal, elimination of facial wrinkles and on the neck.

The PDO thread lift is one of the safest methods of skin rejuvenation if performed and administrated by professionals. The following complications have been listed as side effects:

  • Visible sutures
  • Minor bruising
  • Infection
  • Snapping of threads
  • Accumulation of blood
  • dimpling
  • hair loss
  • inflammation

A tiny incision is made in the temporal area, approximately between the hairs in front of the ear, and the threads are sent under the skin. The skin is lifted upwards. The thorns of the threads will entangle under the skin like an umbrella and prevent the skin from falling. After the threads are fixed in place, the body begins to make new collagen around the thread so that the skin lift effect continues after the threads are completely absorbed.

Both local and injectable anesthesia may be used during non-surgical suturing of the neck and face to ensure that the patient is comfortable. If necessary, more anesthesia can be added to the patient at any time.

At first, after pulling the skin of the face, you may be able to feel the presence of some threads. As the threads gradually begin to absorb, the feeling fades away.

The PDO lift is a quick procedure and is performed under local anesthesia. The time required to perform the operation varies slightly depending on the number of threads used, but on average, it is about an hour.

Patients can return to normal activities within 3 to 7 days. In most cases, there is only slight discomfort, bruising and swelling.

The duration of the thread lift effect depends on the patient’s age at the time of surgery, the amount of sagging skin and the number of threads used, 2 to 5 years and even more.

It is not uncommon to use a thread lift in combination with Botox to reduce facial muscle activity, skin fillers to increase volume or exfoliation, and laser therapy to improve skin texture. Chin augmentation and neck liposuction are other methods that can be performed in conjunction with flossing.

The PDO thread lift rejuvenates the face without changing its natural appearance. Only the soft tissues of the face return to their original position.

There is generally no need to stay home after a thread lift. This is a personal choice. However, it is essential not to put stress on the treated area for the first few days.

An ice pack is recommended immediately after surgery and up to 2 hours later to help prevent bruising. It is recommended to use 2 to 3 pillows in the first 3 to 4 days to raise the shoulders while sleeping. A neck pillow can also be used. About three weeks later, patients can return to their normal lifestyle.

  • Do not smoke or drink alcohol for at least one week after the thread lift
  • Shaving the beard is recommended for men
  • Take vitamin C and eat a healthy diet for at least two weeks before and after surgery
  • Avoid allergies by reporting the medication plan used to your doctor

The PDO thread lift treatment is completely safe and approved by FDA.

  • Active acne or skin infection
  • Protruding area after wound healing
  • Autoimmune diseases: atherosclerosis, sarcoidosis, amyloidosis
  • Anticoagulants: coumarin and heparin
  • hemophilia
  • Pregnancy
  • Malignancy / Chemotherapy

The final results of the PDO thread lift will be seen within one to two months of your treatment. Age is one of the main factors in the rapid production of new and healthy collagen in the body. Collagen is a protein that is responsible for shrinking cheeks, filling fine lines and smoothing wrinkles.

Most of the clients get satisfactory results after one treatment. However, a checkup is needed after six to nine months of the first treatment to measure the follow-up treatment if required.

If you are looking to correct uneven pigments, lines, wrinkles, brittle facial features or loose facial skin, you are a good candidate for a PDO thread lift. If you want to have an immediate facelift but do not have the time and money to do a traditional facelift, you are primarily a good candidate for this treatment.
